The Scope of the Problem
The United States’ rate of incarceration is one of the highest on earth.

"…building prisons does not prevent repeat crimes."
~ New York Times, June 3, 2002

High rates of incarceration devastate families and communities.

"…recidivism rates are now near 70%."
~ New York Times, June 3, 2002

Some Staggering Numbers…
Nationally, about 600,000 individuals are incarcerated each year, while more than 585,000 are released back into society.
Over 1.5 million American children have one or both parents in prison, putting these children at risk and perpetuating the cycle of crime and violence.
In Connecticut alone, there are 20 prisons with more than 17,000 incarcerated men, women, and youth, with an additional 500 incarcerated in an out-of-state prison.

Of these 17,000 individuals:
more than 3,000 are under the age of 20
80% have drug or alcohol problems and many have a co-existing mental health problem.
12% are violent offenders

Public safety may be better served by helping those reentering their families and society adopt a crime-free and productive lifestyle.

Family ReEntry programs increase public safety, improve lives and reduce the tax burden.
