"People who grew up in difficult circumstances and yet are successful have one thing in common: at a critical juncture in their early adolescence, they had a positive relationship with a caring adult."

TRANSITIONS: YOUTHFUL OFFENDER MENTORING PROGRAM
Transitions: Youthful Offenders Mentoring Program is our award-winning program that matches young male and female inmates with caring and committed adults who are volunteers from around the state. What is mentoring?
Mentoring is a one-to-one relationship through which an adult fosters the development of character and competence in a young person.  Responsible mentoring focuses on the needs of youth, fosters caring and supportive relationships and encourages youth to develop their full potential and vision for the future.

Program Requirements for Mentors
A minimum of commitment of four hours per month, for approximately one year. Commitments of 3-6 months will also be considered.
Mentors must be screened and approved by Family ReEntry and the Connecticut Department of Correction.
Mentors are required to attend a training session, and the correctional facility’s security orientation.
CT state law prohibits contact with the youth after the youth’s release from prison.

Program Requirements for Mentees
Completion of Action Plan for Success®, a 12-week life skills training program.
Commitment to the mentoring relationship.
