Making Positive Social Change a Reality
The U.S. can no longer sustain the enormous costs, unintended consequences, and collateral damage to families that result from today's criminal justice polices. A failure to act will continue to result in an unconscionable intergenerational cycle of crime and incarceration, and recidivism rates of 70%. Incarceration alone is not the answer to crime. When a prisoner comes back home, we know that effective rehabilitation and reintegration must be part of the sustainable solution. Family ReEntry is leading an effort to do just that.

Armed with clear and convincing evidence that society can and must do better at reversing the tide, Family ReEntry has expanded its strategic vision. We have set our sights on a major, macro-level change.

Our Fresh Start: Community Reentry Pilot Program is the implementation of this expanded vision. This initiative has the potential to help inner cities create the necessary momentum to reach a tipping-point where the negative, intergenerational cycle of crime and incarceration becomes a wave of positive change that washes over all aspects of the community.

Piloted in Bridgeport, CT, Fresh Start is based on the best thinking and latest research in the field of prisoner reentry. Working in collaboration with the Connecticut Department of Correction and our partner organizations in the community, this pilot is designed to test the effectiveness and feasibility of state-of-the-art reentry programming. The outcomes are being measured by Yale University, which we began presenting to the State and interested citizens starting in early 2008.

Our program builds in many of the necessary components of a cost effective reentry model.

  • We reach into the prisons to begin our prerelease work six months prior to release.
  • We incorporated successful EX-offenders as mentors, role models, and community leaders for the men exiting prison and for the vulnerable at-risk youth in the community.
  • We are developing innovative employment solutions to address the daunting challenges and institutionalized obstacles to a sustainable, meaningful, and livable wage.
